The aim of this activity was to bring children close to nature in its budding season. In a modern technological world children are not used to appreciating the simplicity of rural life. Since there is a valley within walking distance from school the teacher thought it would be a good idea to take the children out to enjoy the fresh air and admire the beauties of Mother nature.
The first stop was in one of the fields found in Wied Ghomor Valley. Here the children were shown different trees and crops that grow at this time of year. They were made aware of the hard work involved in growing various fruit and vegetables. Before leaving the field the children had the opportunity to taste some juicy broad beans.
Then the walk continued with various stops along the way to give time to the students to admire the different flora (plants, flowers and trees) and fauna that have taken up their habitat in this valley. The children were given a booklet in which they had to draw flowers, identify trees and look for different creatures without disturbing their natural habitat.
The last stop was near a Maltese girna, which together with the rubble wall is one of the characteristics of our local countryside. The children were required to draw a picture of a girna in their booklets before setting off on their way back to school. |
