Creativity and Innovation Week:  23- 27th March 2009

This week was a special week at school with various different projects taken on board. But the climax of the week was an activity that took place on Friday 27th March 2009.  During this activity which lasted for two hours, between 10.30 and 12.30, students were grouped according to their month of birth. Each group was assigned a different class teacher and an LSA to engage in a creative project.  Various projects were undertaken and a plethora of activities were engaged in.  The following is a resume of the various activities conducted and the respective month group.

Treasure Hunt - Ms.J.Gauci

Children are to imagine that they are lost on a deserted island.  In groups of five, they are going to start a Scavenger Hunt in the school garden.  Every time that they guess a clue, they are presented with different objects to choose from.  They will choose one reward after each clue.  At the end of the hunt, they are given a map of the place to find a treasure box.  In the box they’ll find a treat for each one of them and a card telling them what to do next.  At the end of the activity the students would have to construct a raft with the objects that served as a reward each time they found a clue.  The raft would be the symbolic escape from the island.

Redecoration of the School Yard- Ms. M. Azzopardi Duca and Ms. D.Galea

The children were divided in groups of 3 and each group had to paint a column.
The colours were in this order:  blue, yellow, green, yellow and repeats
.

The school yard was so colourful that day that we were more eager to play and have fun in it but at the same time we were anxious not to dirt the columns.

Building Traffic Signs: Ms. Miceli Donnelly and Ms. L. Callus

Short PowerPoint Presentation about different categories of traffic signs.
Deciding on what traffic signs to produce for the school’s front yard in order to make this area safe for monthly bike rides.
The actual making of the traffic signs.

Investigating Trees- Ms. M. Grima

A short discussion about trees was carried out in class.
An informative work booklet was distributed to all children.  Hands-on activities were carried out in the school yard. Activities included:
- Discovering the age of a tree.
- Measuring the height of a tree.
- Planting of trees.
- Leaf printing

Friendship Wreath - Ms. A. Sant

The wreath was made of hands.  The students had a discussion at the beginning of the session and then the LSA and the complementary teacher begun helping out students to cut silhouette hands.  In the meantime, the teachers took photos of all the students.  After each student cut 20 silhouette hands each, the children were grouped into five groups and the wreaths were formed.  The children then stuck the photos on the wreath.

A Ramble in a Nearby Valley - Ms. M. Calleja

The aim of this activity was to bring children close to nature in its budding season.  In a modern technological world children are not used to appreciating the simplicity of rural life.  Since there is a valley within walking distance from school the teacher thought it would be a good idea to take the children out to enjoy the fresh air and admire the beauties of Mother nature.

The first stop was in one of the fields found in Wied Ghomor Valley.  Here the children were shown different trees and crops that grow at this time of year.  They were made aware of the hard work involved in growing various fruit and vegetables.  Before leaving the field the children had the opportunity to taste some juicy broad beans.

Then the walk continued with various stops along the way to give time to the students to admire the different flora (plants, flowers and trees) and fauna that have taken up their habitat in this valley.  The children were given a booklet in which they had to draw flowers, identify trees and look for different creatures without disturbing their natural habitat.

The last stop was near a Maltese girna, which together with the rubble wall is one of the characteristics of our local countryside.  The children were required to draw a picture of a girna in their booklets before setting off on their way back to school.

Making Easter Biscuits - Mr. C. Buttigieg

The students watched the preparation of Easter biscuits.  Step-by-step instructions were given and the children worked together with teacher and helpers.  A handout was given as re-inforcement of the actual activity.  Two Easter season recipes were also included in the bilingual handout. Follow-up work was also given at the end of the activity.

Toast Sandwich and Fresh Fruit Juice- Ms. S. Agius

Healthy sandwiches were prepared and a healthy fruit drink was made with fresh fruit.

Attention was given on the nutritinal aspect of the ingredients and the presentation aspect of the food items.

The Cat Show - Ms. D. Fenech

Pupils made masks using colours and various materials for crafts.

Later, they were divided into 4 groups and each group had to make a cat costume using recyclable material.

Glorious Pizza - Mr. S. Zammit
Pupils were instructed to bring along a pizza base together with healthy pizza topping ingredients. After shaping the base of the pizza as they pleased (in different forms e.g. cats, dogs, heart etc..), the children placed the ingredients on top of the base.  Together as a class they left for the village bakery to bake their pizzas.

It was a wonderful experience.
The Rose Garden - Mrs. D. Trapani

Short discussion about spring (season of flowers)
Children made crepe paper roses.
Children’s work was put up on a chart to make a rose garden.
A relevant poem was recited.

Leaf Printing - Mrs. L. Pace

The students drew an outline of a tree and then printed the leaves in green and the bark of the tree in brown paint using corks.

A discussion followed wherein students were led to note that whatever the form of the leaves, they still made up a beautiful tree when put together. The students were made aware that in a similar way society became richer with the inclusion of different people.

Fetching Unity in Diversity!

This event was a truly enjoyable and fruitful experience for all those involved.
